Johnson Controls Security Solution

Led the UX of Johnson Controls' enterprise security platform — access control, intrusion detection, video monitoring, fire and life safety, mass notification, and beyond — managing a team of three designers as IC-lead. Now used by security and access teams across many large buildings.

Overview

It shipped and is now deployed across many large buildings with security and access-control teams operating it daily.

The Brief

Johnson Controls contracted me to stand up a design team for their enterprise security platform — built to compete with Verkada in the cloud-first security space. The bet: a single coherent operator interface could replace the patchwork of disconnected vendor tools that security teams in large buildings — campuses, hospitals, airports, corporate towers — were stitching together. Scope covered access control, monitoring, detection, emergency response, and the strategic dashboards that tie them together.

The interface had to work across thousands of building configurations with no two layouts the same. Operators couldn't be trained on a new mental model — they came from existing systems and had muscle memory we had to respect.

Managed a team of three designers as IC-lead — running the strategy, owning the system architecture, and shipping shoulder-to-shoulder on the surfaces that mattered most. The platform spanned the full security portfolio: access control (managed, hosted, biometric), intrusion detection and burglar alarm systems, video monitoring with visual alarm verification, weapons detection, cyber security, fire and life safety, emergency preparedness, mass notification, and the cross-cutting all-security and total-security dashboards — plus the digital and emerging technologies view — under one operator interface.
